The great classics of the horror genre, whether already truly horror, still early gothic or somewhere in between in their nature, never cease to inspire creative minds. While we, probably very much like you, have grown tired of remade and rehashed movies, one man’s project out of England caught our attention: Richard Campbell’s Orpheus Studio Productions in October last year presented a stage adaptation of Richard’s progressive rock concept album ‘Frankenstein’, a thrilling musical portrayal of the original sci-fi horror. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein was brought to life by the electrifying impact of live rock music. Now, the production will be available on DVD for audiences worldwide soon. Come on inside for the official trailer and more details. Witness a faithful re-telling of the classic gothic novel, during a night at the opera like no other.
The journey to the stage began with Ricard’s original concept album in 2012, and this off west-end premiere has been a true labour of love for the creative team behind the project: Richard Campbell (Composer/Co-Writer), Carol Pestridge (Co-Writer) and Alan Mandel (Director).
Starting life as a concept album, Richard and co-writer Carol adapted Mary Shelley’s novel into a horror spectacular. Richard wrote and recorded all of the instruments himself and gathered a group of talented singers to perform the title roles. Soon after its worldwide release, currently available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon, Richard was contacted by the folks at Landless Theatre Company in Washington DC asking if they could take a crack at a stage adaptation. After watching it premiere in July 2013, Richard and Carol were inspired to team up with director Alan Mandel to workshop a scaled down version at the Rose & Crown Pub for Halloween. The response was overwhelming and for both of the shows the pub was packed full of eager people hoping to see the Creature in action. It was obvious that the full stage adaptation would need to follow and the Lansbury Players stepped up to co-produce.
Richard Campbell’s ‘Frankenstein: The Metal Opera’, filmed over six performances at The Space, London in October 2014, starrs Roy Ryan as Victor Frankenstein, Duncan Drury as The Creature, James Craze as Robert Walton, Anya Hamilton as Elizabeth Lavenza, Max Panks as Jacob, and Charlotte de Paeztron as Florence/Justine.
A release date for the DVD of ‘Frankenstein: The Metal Opera’ has not been officially announced at the time of this writing. The concept album ‘Frankenstein’ is available on DVD from Richard Campbell’s official website below.
