NEWS: Chanel Ryan on filming Brandon Slagle’s ‘Dead Sea’

This past weekend, Brandon Slagle’s forthcoming creature feature ‘Dead Sea’ was awarded Best World Premiere Trailer at the 2014 ShockFest Film Festival at Raleigh Studios. We caught up with Chanel Ryan to chat about shooting ‘Dead Sea’ and her character Claire. Come on inside and check it out, plus we have the full length trailer for you.

The globe-spanning story of ‘Dead Sea’ follows a Marine Biologist who is thrust into the violent paranoia surrounding a town preparing for the return of an impending sacrifice to a legendary serpentine creature, in this case being a giant lamprey, said to have surfaced from hell during an earthquake.
“My character and a group of friends are spending our summer vacation having fun in the sun,” tells us Chanel when asked about her character Claire, “traveling from location to location partying. We end up on a pontoon boat on the lake, wondering why we are the only people around. To quote my character ‘It’s way better for us’.”
And where did you film ‘Dead Sea’? “We filmed on Big Bear lake at the beginning of June.  It was a bit breezy and chilly, and the lake was not heated,” Chanel reveals. “Contrary to popular belief it is not always sunny and scorching hot in California. I never get sick (knock on wood!) and hadn’t had a cold in about two years. A few days before filming, I came down with a really awful flu, complete with uncontrollable coughing, a nose running like a faucet and 104 temperature. To make a long story short, I was deathly sick when we filmed in the water.” Given you have to pretend being miserable, being sick as a dog and forced into cold water might greatly help the performance along. If your part is that of a fun party girl, not so much.
If you had to pick one fond memory from the endeavor of filming ‘Dead Sea’, what would that be? “Another fun story from the set,” Chanel offers in response. “The cast and crew were all staying at this great house right on the lake.  My scene in the water was the last shot right as the sun went down. So we finish filming and I am freezing!  I run inside to jump in the shower and warm up.  Only there is no hot water left!  My head is covered in blood, and I am shaking so badly from the cold that my hands are numb and I can’t get the blood out of my hair! Devanny runs me out to the jacuzzi to warm me up.  Britt Griffith had the same idea and is already in the hot tub. So him and I chat while Devanny is frantically trying to wash the blood out of my hair. Running back and forth to the house with a pot for water. By the time we were done, Britt and I were good friends, the jacuzzi had turned pink from the blood and also gone cold. Devanny told me after she didn’t think the blood was going to come out of my hair and thought I was going to be leaving there with a pink head…” Sooo…? “Luckily all ended well.”
‘Dead Sea’, set for release on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 13, 2014, starrs Britt Griffith (Syfy’s Ghosthunters, Ghosthunters International), James Jw Wiseman (The Deadliest Warrior), Devanny Pinn (The Black Dahlia Haunting, Truth or Dare), James Duval (Donnie Darko, Independence Day), Alexis Iacono (The Penny Dreadful Picture Show, World of Warcraft),  Chanel Ryan (Bad Kids Go To Hell, BASEketball), Candace Kita (Barb Wire, Two and a Half Men), Tawny Amber Young (Wonderland), KJ McCormick (Syfy’s Ghosthunters), Frederic Doss (Transformers, GI JOE The Rise of Cobra). ‘Dead Sea’ is directed by Brandon Slagle.
